This blog post is going to provide a brief summary of the life and times of Surendra Mohan Pathak, an Indian author who wrote more than thirty-eight novels. In 2016, he was awarded with Lifetime Achievement Award for Silver Jubilee Celebrations on the occasion of 100 years of Hindi Satyagraha Movement. Based on his personal experiences, he has been able to share stories from various social groups and regions about the daily trials and tribulations faced by them which have made his writing very popular amongst all age groups in India. He was born on 3 January 1902 in a small town called Ramnagar, Uttar Pradesh as Surendra Mohan Paul. He was named after him father who hailed from the same name. He was the youngest of five children of his father Prem Paul and mother Karnamani Devi. His siblings were Ashok (murdered in Calcutta), Prabhu (died of tuberculosis), Manju, and Bimal. He did his schooling from Chaturvedi High School, Lucknow and passed matriculation in 1920. During his college days, he took part in student movements against the British colonialists. He passed Intermediate examination in 1922 and joined Presidency College, Lucknow as an undergraduate on 15 October 1923 where he completed MA on 15 July 1925 followed by LLB on 12 June 1928. After completing his law degree, he joined the British Indian Civil Service as an Inspector of Schools in July 1929 and was promoted as a Sub Divisional Officer on 8 November 1932. He served as a member of the All India Congress Committee from Lucknow district from 1925 to 1929 and was imprisoned for 11 days by the British Government for participating in the Satyagraha movement against them. He resigned from his service and moved to Dehradun where he took part in various activities against British colonialists during the Quit India Movement. He also joined Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee and worked tirelessly for building up a strong base for Congress Party amongst tribals of Chamba, Bajnaga, Bhotiya etc. Subsequently, he was elected as the President of the Chamba and Bajnaga Tribal Protection Committee and helped in getting them free from oppression. In 1943, he joined Jana Sangh as an activist and started working for the development of tribal districts of Chamba. He used his influence to get 854 tribal families out of Jails and succeeded in creating a model village (Teerth Margaon) where tribals were provided free homes, agricultural land and other amenities all over India. It is said that several people from all over India benefited from this model village due to which he got the nickname "Baba Teerth". In 1956, he started his own publishing house and dedicated his entire time and energy in bringing out literature by various writers. He served as Joint General Secretary of the Deendayal Sangh from 1957 onwards and continued to serve as Joint Secretary till 1959. In 1961, he was appointed as the President of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Foundation, New Delhi. He had written 38 novels Till date. List of Surendra Mohan Pathak's novels:
